Rev. Elwood R. Goins

The Rev. Elwood R. Goins, retired minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, died in North Owego on Saturday, April 10, 1937, aged 60 years. Mr. Goins was born in Ohio on March 26, 1876, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Goins. He was a former pastor of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, of this village, and upon his completion of his charge here several years ago, he retired from the ministry.

He is survived by four sons, Isadore D. Goins, Delmont L. Goins, Alden F. Goins and Paul V. Goins all of Owego; two brothers Loyal Goins and Henry Goins, both of Toledo, Ohio and one sister. Mrs. Lillian Webster of Steubenville, Ohio.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o' clock at Emens funeral chapel on Front Street.  The Rev. James Sterling, of the village officiated. Burial was made at the Halsey Valley Cemetery.

Mrs. Nellie C. Goines wife of the Rev. Elwood R. Goines, died on Monday morning, February 8, 1937, at their farm east of the Straits Corners improved highway where she and her husband removed from 208 Lackawanna Avenue, Owego. She was 60 years old. Besides her husband, who was formerly pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church, in this village, she is survived by fours sons, Isadore D., Delmont L, Alden F. and Paul V. Goines; a sister Miss Eliza Weaver, of Powhatan, O., and two brothers, Filmore Weaver, also of Powhatan and John Weaver of Kansas City, Mo.. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bethel A.M.E. Church. The Rev. William F. Meyer will officiate assisted by pastor, the Rev. James Sterling. Burial will be in the cemetery at Halsey Valley.
